I rate my restaurants

Claude connectors and ChatGPT connectors do the same job. They plug the AI into your tools, such as Gmail, Google Drive, Microsoft 365, Slack or HubSpot. It then reads live information instead of what you paste in. Both rely largely on MCP, an open standard. The main difference today is naming: in ChatGPT, connectors are now called apps.

For a restaurant group, that matters more than it sounds. An operations director spends the week bouncing between private event inquiries in Outlook, schedules and recipe cards in Drive, SOPs in Notion, and reviews for every location on Google, Yelp and DoorDash. As long as those sources stay separate, the AI only sees part of the picture.

This guide compares Claude connectors and ChatGPT connectors side by side and walks through four setups that pay off for a multi-unit operator. It also covers the admin settings to lock down before you roll them out to your team.

Key takeaways

  • Same idea, two names: Claude calls them connectors; ChatGPT now calls them apps, grouped in a plugin directory since July 2026.
  • MCP under the hood: the Model Context Protocol, launched by Anthropic in November 2024 and now hosted by the Linux Foundation, lets any compatible AI plug into any compatible tool.
  • What changes: the AI reads your email, files and docs live, with exactly the permissions of the account you connect. No exports, no copy-paste.
  • Admins in control: on team plans, an admin enables each connector and can allow reads while requiring approval for writes such as sending an email.
  • Training data: on ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, data accessed through apps is not used for training by default; on individual plans it depends on a setting.
  • Your restaurant data too: industry platforms now ship their own MCP. With Malou's, ChatGPT or Claude can query reviews, Google visibility and social performance across every location.
  • Start small: one connector, read-only, one clear use case, then expand.

What are connectors, and what is MCP?

A connector is a secure link between an AI assistant and another tool. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the shared language that makes those links possible. Anthropic open-sourced MCP on November 25, 2024 so that tools would not need a custom integration for every AI model: a vendor builds one "MCP server" and every compatible AI can use it.

It quickly became the industry default. On December 9, 2025, the Linux Foundation launched the Agentic AI Foundation to host MCP, with OpenAI, Google and Microsoft among its members. At the time it counted more than 10,000 published MCP servers, with the protocol adopted by Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.

For an operator, the rule of thumb is simple: one connector equals live access. No coding required.

How to set up Claude connectors and admin controls

Claude connectors live in a directory you open from any chat (the "+" button, then Connectors) or from settings. It includes Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Notion, Slack, HubSpot, Canva and Microsoft 365 (Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams).

According to Claude's help center, they work on the web and in Claude Desktop (setup on mobile is still in beta). Pick a connector, click Connect, sign in to the service, then turn it on in the conversation. You can also add a custom connector by pasting an MCP server URL; Free users are limited to one.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner must enable each connector for the organization, and every user still signs in with their own account. Owners can set each action to "always allow", "needs approval" or "blocked", for example letting Claude search email but not send it.

Why ChatGPT connectors are now called apps

OpenAI no longer uses the word "connectors" in its help center: they are apps, and since July 2026 they sit in a plugin directory. Setup works the same way: open Apps or Plugins, pick the tool, connect and approve the permissions.

Availability depends on your plan, region and workspace settings. On Business plans, many apps are enabled by default and admins decide what stays on.

Permissions range from "always ask" to "allow all actions", which OpenAI flags as elevated risk. Since June 8, 2026, ChatGPT can draft and send email from a connected Gmail or Outlook account on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, per its release notes. Sending is treated as a write action you approve.

In practice, the choice of AI matters less than the discipline around it: both tools inherit the permissions of the connected account, so if that account can see payroll files, so can the AI. Our guide to what customer data you can share with ChatGPT and Claude sets the limits.

4 connector setups for a restaurant group

1. Inbox (Gmail or Outlook). Ask: "List every private event inquiry since September 1 with date, headcount and location, and flag the ones nobody answered." Keep sending under approval.

2. Files (Google Drive or SharePoint). Schedules, recipe cards, sales exports and site visit notes become searchable without downloading anything. Drop your consolidated review export in a connected folder and query it directly instead of re-uploading it every month. Our guide to using ChatGPT and Claude with your restaurant data explains where this fits in a broader AI plan.

3. Wiki (Notion). If your opening checklists and location fact sheets live in Notion, a general manager can ask "what's the procedure if the walk-in fails at our Austin location?" and get your answer, not a generic one. Start read-only.

4. Restaurant data (Malou MCP). Office tools say nothing about what your guests experience. Reviews, Google visibility and social performance are spread across platforms and locations, which is where industry vendors step in with their own MCP server.

Malou offers an MCP that connects your Malou data to ChatGPT or Claude, so you can ask in plain English and get answers from up-to-date data across all your locations, with no exports:

  • "Which locations need my attention most this month, and why?"
  • "What topics come up most often in negative reviews across my group this month?"
  • "Which locations improved the most on Google over the last 3 months?"
  • "Write a monthly performance summary for my leadership team."

You also get analyses no standard dashboard offers, such as whether a location's Google rating tracks its review volume. See the Malou MCP in action on your own locations, or watch our webinar replay to see connected sources working live.

Mistakes to avoid

Before you roll connectors out to your team, watch for four common mistakes.

  • Connecting everything on day one: the more sources the AI has, the harder it is to know where an answer came from.
  • Using a personal plan for company data: on ChatGPT Free, Plus, Go and Pro, data accessed through apps may be used for training if "Improve the model for everyone" is on. Use Business or Enterprise, or Claude Team or Enterprise.
  • Installing unknown custom connectors: Claude warns that connectors added by URL are not verified by Anthropic, so only use MCP servers from vendors you trust.
  • Skipping verification: ask for the source behind every number before it reaches your leadership meeting.

Frequently asked questions

What is MCP?

MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT connect to software to read its data or take actions in it. Anthropic launched it in November 2024 and contributed it to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation in December 2025. A vendor that builds one MCP server makes its tool available to every compatible AI.

How do I connect ChatGPT to Gmail?

Open Apps or Plugins in ChatGPT, select Gmail, click Connect and sign in with the Google account that has access to the mailbox, then approve the requested permissions. In a company workspace, an admin may need to enable the app first. Connect an account with limited access rather than an admin account, and keep sending email under your approval.

Are Claude connectors free?

Directory connectors are available to all Claude users, including on the Free plan, on the web and in Claude Desktop (setup on mobile is still in beta). Custom connectors, added by pasting an MCP server URL, are available on every plan, but Free users are limited to one. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner must enable each connector for the organization before users can sign in.

Is my data used for training when I connect apps?

It depends on the plan. On ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu, OpenAI does not use information accessed through apps to train its models by default. On Free, Plus, Go and Pro, it may be used if "Improve the model for everyone" is turned on. For company data, use a business plan and review the setting before connecting any tool.

Can I connect ChatGPT or Claude to my Google reviews?

Yes, but for a multi-location group, exports do not scale: full review extraction goes through the Google Business Profile API, location by location. The most direct route is the MCP of a platform that already centralizes your reviews, such as Malou. ChatGPT or Claude can then query reviews, Google visibility and social performance across all your locations.

At Malou, we help restaurant groups manage their local visibility — listings, reviews, content — across every location, and query that data straight from ChatGPT or Claude with the Malou MCP. Test your group's visibility with our diagnostic tool.
